The Department of Underground Mining of Mineral Deposits is one of the oldest departments at the university, established in 1955 during a period of rapid development of the mining industry in Kyrgyzstan, when the country urgently needed qualified mining engineers. Since its foundation, the department has been the only institution in the republic preparing specialists in Underground Mining of Mineral Deposits.

Faculty Composition: Currently, the department employs 10 teaching staff, including 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 3 senior lecturers, 2 lecturers, and 1 methodologist. Among them, 2 hold the title of Doctor of Science and 3 are Candidates of Technical Sciences.

The department’s development focuses on training mining engineers-technologists who will work at deposits developed by underground and combined mining methods. Senior students participate in the university’s research projects and contribute to scientific work. Together with faculty, they actively take part in scientific and technical conferences. Graduates who complete their studies with honors often continue to postgraduate programs or are invited to join the university staff.

As a graduating educational unit, the department carries out scientific, educational, methodological, and organizational activities. It offers training in Specialty 630003 “Mining” with specializations in “Underground Mining of Mineral Deposits” and “Mine and Underground Construction”. The duration of study is 5 years for full-time programs and 6 years for distance learning. Graduates find employment in mining-geological industries, other industrial sectors, as well as in design and research institutes.

Graduates can work not only at mining enterprises but also in research and design institutes, participating in expert groups. Many alumni are engaged in the design and construction of mining roads, hydroelectric dams, tailings dams, and in organizing and conducting engineering-geological surveys for geotechnical projects in mountainous areas.

Collaborations: The department maintains agreements on scientific and technical cooperation with various organizations on a reciprocal and equal basis, including the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University named after B. Yeltsin, Jalal-Abad State University, the Institute of Geomechanics and Subsoil Development of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, AO “Khaidarkan Mercury Plant,” OAO “Kyrgyzaltyn,” OAO “Shakhta Jyrgalan,” OAO “Kyrgyz-Tash,” and others.

Department students complete academic and industrial internships at mining enterprises across the country, including ZAO “Kumtor Gold Company,” Jyrgalan Mine, Khaidarkan, Terek-Say, Makmal, Chaarat, Bozymchak, and Taldybulak Left Bank.

The department actively develops relations with research organizations such as the Engineering Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic, the Institute of Geomechanics and Subsoil Development (NAS KR), and leading higher education institutions in Kyrgyzstan and the CIS.

Current Leadership: The department is headed by Academician Kozhogulov K.Ch., President of the Engineering Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic, Honored Scientist of the Kyrgyz Republic, State Prize Laureate, Doctor of Technical Sciences, and Professor. Under his leadership, 7 doctoral and 20 candidate dissertations have been successfully defended.
