Department of Applied Mathematics, KSTU named after. I. Razzakova was formed on September 30, 2004 (Order No. 63). In September 2014, in connection with the reorganization of the Department of Applied Mathematics, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Informatics (hereinafter referred to as “API”) was created. By order of the rector 1/135 dated September 1, 2022, in connection with giving KSTU a special status and reorganization, the department of “Applied Mathematics and Informatics” included the department of the same name at KSUST.

The department is headed by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic, Honored Education Worker of the Kyrgyz Republic, Academician of the Engineering Academy of the Kyrgyz Republic, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Engineering M. J. Dzhamanbaev.

The mission of the department is to improve and develop quality education through the implementation of educational programs in the field of applied mathematics and computer science through training, research, and innovation in accordance with the needs of society, the state, and business.
The purpose of the department is to prepare highly qualified bachelors, masters, and graduate students with knowledge in the field of applied mathematics, business informatics and modern information technologies, who have universal and subject-specific competencies that contribute to their social mobility and sustainability in the labor market.

Starting from the 2011-2012 academic year, the preparation of bachelors in the direction 510200 “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science” begins. In the 2016-2017 academic year, the preparation of masters begins in the direction 510200 “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”, the profile “Mathematical Modeling”.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, a joint educational program was opened with the National Research Nuclear University (NRNU-MEPhI) for the preparation of masters in the direction 510200 “Applied Mathematics and Informatics” with the awarding of two diplomas from KSTU and NRNU-MEPhI.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, bachelors are trained in the direction 680200 “Biotechnical Systems and Technologies”, in the profile “Medical Informatics” and in the 2016-2017 academic year in the direction 580500 “Business Informatics” in the profile “Electronic Business” (full-time and part-time form of training using DOT).

Starting from the 2021-2022 academic year, bachelors are being trained in the profile “Analysis and Processing of Big Data” in the direction 510200 “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”. The profile was opened within the framework of the ELBA project under the educational program of the European Union. The uniqueness of the profile is that students will master professional competencies in the field of machine learning, neural networks, and text information analysis.

From the 2022-2023 academic year, together with the St. Petersburg State Technical University. D.F. Ustinova is preparing bachelors in the direction 580500 “Business Informatics”, profile “Electronic Business”.

The educational programs of the PMI department have successfully passed the initial independent public and professional accreditation:

OP 510200 Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (Master's degree) in the profile "Mathematical Modeling" at the international accreditation agency "Independent Accreditation and Rating Agency" in 2023.

OP 580500 "Business Informatics" (bachelor's degree) in the profile "Electronic business") in the accreditation agency "Agency for Accreditation of Educational Programs and Organizations" in 2019.

OP 510200 Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (Bachelor's degree) and OP 680200 "Biotechnical systems and Technologies" (bachelor's degree) in the profile "Medical Informatics") in the accreditation agency "Bilim Standard" in 2021.

In 2021, a Scientific and Educational Center for Big Data Analysis and Processing was opened on the basis of the PMI department. The center was opened as part of the project "Creation of training and research centers and development of courses on big data mining in Central Asia (ELBA). The main objectives of the project are: data mining, research in the field of machine learning, research in the field of information technology. The Center maintains links with the University of the Sea (Slovenia); Turin Polytechnic University (Italy); University of Santiago de Compostella (Spain); Bukhara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Turin Polytechnic University, Al-Khorezmi Urgench State University, Tashkent Institute of Design, Construction and Operation of Highways (Uzbekistan); Technological University, Kulyab Institute of Technology and Innovation Management (Tajikistan); International University of Information Technology, Kostanay State University named after A. Baitursynov (Kazakhstan), as well as with Osh Technological University.

Active work is being carried out with associations of domestic IT enterprises to improve the quality of the educational process and increase the competence of staff.
